Effects of CBD Oil and Marijuana For Autism

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder typified by issues with speech, non-verbal communication, social skills, and repetitive behaviours. This condition is also referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and there are many subtypes.

Being a spectrum disorder, people with autism display unique characteristics. In some people the condition is mild and they can go about their daily activities without much trouble. On the other hand, some may be severely challenged and will require help even with easy and mundane tasks. Normally, the disorder is accompanied by problems such as sleep disorders, anxiety, seizures, gastrointestinal disorders and depression.

The exact cause of autism is still a mystery to scientists. According to studies, several factors that can lead to autism include: metabolic imbalances, exposure to environmental toxins, genetics (having a close family member suffering from it), and being born to older parents.

Autism has no cure. Some traditional treatments include: speech therapy, physical therapy, play therapy, and occupational therapy. All these help manage the condition and prevent it from getting worse. Recently, many people have turned to cannabis to help with the treatment of ASD.

The two most popular chemical compounds in cannabis — THC and CBD have been known to produce certain effects when ingested.

Recent studies and anecdotal evidence suggest that cannabis products are effective in the treatment of autism. Let’s get into the details.

Research About CBD and Cannabis Oil And Autism

Cannabis is not just any other plant. For hundreds of years, humans used this plant as a drug without knowing what it did to the body. Because of its psychotropic properties, cannabis was treated as an illegal drug for decades. It’s only recently that its medical and recreational use was allowed.

Studies have shown that cannabinoids such as THC and CBD influence the human endocannabinoid system (ECS).

The function of the ECS is to regulate processes such as mood, appetite and sleep. It maintains a balance in the body and this enables us to function normally. Weed cannabinoids attach to endocannabinoid receptors in the body to bring about various effects. Learn more.

A study was done to assess the safety, tolerability and efficacy of cannabidiol (CBD) based medical cannabis, as supplementary treatment for refractory behavioural problems in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. 60 children were used in the study and they were treated with oral THC and CBD in the ratio 20:1.

Results showed that in 61% of the patients, behavioural outbreaks were improved or very much improved. Anxiety and communication problems in the autistic children were also greatly reduced. Parents of children used in the study reported that their kids were less stressed. This shows that cannabis can be a potential effective treatment for children with autism. View study.

Another research involving 188 ASD patients was done to determine the safety and efficacy of CBD oil and medical Cannabis in treating autism. The cannabis oil used with most patients contained 30% CBD and 1.5% THC.

An assessment made after 6 months of treatment found that: 155 patients were in active treatment (82.4%) and 93 (60.1%) had been assessed. 28 patients (30.1%) reported that their condition had greatly improved, 50 (53.7%) showed moderate improvement, 6 (6.4%) slight improvement and 8 (8.6%) didn’t feel any effect. 23 patients reported transient side effects, the most notable being restlessness. The Effects Of CBD On Autism

CBD influences the endocannabinoid system and is believed to have therapeutic properties. Researchers have been able to prove that children with autism have low levels of endocannabinoids were found in children with autism. One study involved a five-year old boy who had had ASD since age 2.

Hemp-derived cannabis with higher amounts of CBD than THC was used after conventional medication proved ineffective. The CBD oil was placed in the child’s freshly juiced fruit and vegetable juice. The dosage was 3 mg twice a day but was increased gradually to 20 mg thrice a day.

Changes were seen within the first two weeks – the boy slept better and social anxiety was greatly reduced. In the three-month observation period, other positive changes such as improved focus and compliance with instructions were noticeable. Click here to read more. This shows that optimal dosages of CBD oil are great for treating autism in children.

Research on the use of Cannabis oil and CBD oil for the treatment of ASD is still at its infancy stages. Scientists believe that more studies on it will help them gain a better understanding of the condition and develop better cannabis-based treatments.
