CBD Oil For Depression – Effects and Dosages
Depression is a mental condition that alters one’s moods, emotions, and general body activeness. Research shows that it’s as a result of the decrease of ‘happy hormones’ such as dopamine and serotonin. Naturally, every human goes through highs and lows.
Depression is a prolonged period of stress and anxiety. Some causes include chronic medical conditions such as cancer, past experiences like sexual abuse, and work or family related issues.
Usually, this mental disorder significantly reduces the quality of life. At times, it induces suicidal thoughts. You’ve probably heard of people committing suicide due to depression.
It is a fact that conventional medication doesn’t completely eradicate the condition. In the past few years, there has been a lot of research on the use of CBD in treating depression. And more people are embracing it.
CBD Oil and Depression
Depression can be detrimental to one’s health if it’s persistent. The past decade has seen more people use weed for depression . Studies have shown that CBD has antidepressant properties and can be effective in the treatment of this neurological disorder.
The decrease in serotonin in the brain may lead to changes in moods and stress. Cannabinoids from cannabis interact with receptors in the brain and could enhance the levels of mood hormones such as serotonin. Such hormones are responsible for feelings of well-being so marijuana can be said to relieve stress.
Experiments have proved that Cannabidiol does not have the negative side effects of conventional medication. Usually, medication for depression is linked to mood swings, insomnia, weight loss, and loss of appetite. In contrast, CBD has an energizing effect and promotes general body alertness, according to success stories. Further reading.
The interaction of cannabinoids and the ECS is what gives CBD its therapeutic effects. A study was done to see whether CBD helps improve sleep and/or anxiety in a clinical population. A total of 72 individuals were involved. 47 had anxiety disorders while 25 had sleep problems. Within the first month, anxiety decreased in 57 patients (79.2%) and sleep score also improved in 48 patients (66.7%). See research.
CBD Strains for Depression: Which Strain is the Best?
Cannabis is known to have two main strains – Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica. The strains differ in many ways. Some factors that differentiate them include origin, effects on the body and, more importantly, the varying contents of the most studied compounds – CBD and THC.
THC is responsible for making users ‘high’ or ‘stoned’. CBD doesn’t cause intoxication but acts as a sedative and is great for treating conditions such as migraines and seizures. Other compounds include THCA, CBN and CBG.
Cannabis sativa usually has more levels of THC and is the preferred strain for people who want to experience an uplifting effect. Some health benefits associated with the strain are: treats chronic pain, enhances creativity and focus, reduces anxiety, acts as an antidepressant, and boosts serotonin.
Unlike sativa, indica plants have significantly low levels of THC and more CBD. It is known to provide full-body health benefits. These medicinal benefits include: boosts appetite, relaxes the muscles, prevents nausea, and relieves chronic pain. Click here to read more.
There is another strain known as hybrid-basically a mix of the two main strains. Hybrid strains may be sativa-dominant, indica-dominant or can be 50-50. They provide more balanced benefits.
Popular strains of cannabis include: Jack Herer, Harlequin, Granddaddy purple, and Blackberry kush. So, which is the best for depression?
That depends on how your body reacts. If you want to feel a high, go with THC dominant strains and if you want a relaxing effect, use CBD dominant strains. Hybrid strains could be better as they have qualities from both sides.
CBD Oil Dosage for Depression
What is the right CBD oil dosage for depression? There’s no specific drug because the cannabis industry is unregulated as little research has been done to determine dosages that would be appropriate for depressed people.
The easiest and most effective way to ingest CBD oil is the sublingual method-you hold a few drops under the tongue for a minute or so. The oil is usually absorbed quickly to the bloodstream. Another way is to mix the oil with essential oils like grapeseed oil when eating it with your favourite meal. CBD oil could also be vaporized/inhaling. This is quite an effective way to take it but it’s not good for the lungs.
The efficacy of the dosage depends on several factors: weight, metabolism, age etc. For a fair start, a dosage of between 20-50 mg a day is appropriate. Chronic cases may require a higher dosage.
Remember that the use of cannabis or overdependence on it can cause negative effects such as rapid heart rate, reduce blood pressure, drowsiness, and paranoia. When you notice this, you can either reduce intake or stop it and focus on other treatments. If it works for you, take care not to overdose.
